With only 24 million (17% Mongolians) people and a vast land area that’s the third largest in China (1.2 million Square Kilometers or 424,736 Square Miles), Inner Mongolia (NeiMengGu) is where you can let your imagination run wild as you ride side-by-side with Genghis Khan over its vast grasslands, but the truth is you need to go further a field from the capital HohHot to find the “real” Mongolia and it wont be the Mongol hordes, just a few nomadic herders with their sheep and horses.
Inner Mongolia along with GuangXi, NingXia, Tibet (XiZang) and XinJiang are all classified as autonomous regions, and as such its local government has more legislative rights then a Province.
With Russia and Mongolia to its north, Inner Mongolia shares borders with eight other provinces, starting from left is GanSu, NingXia, ShaanXi, ShanXi, HeBei, LiaoNing, JiLin and HeiLongJiang.
