QingHai Province in terms of population size is one of the smallest - 5 million (21% of which are Tibetans, other minorities living in QingHai are the Tu, Hui, Salar and Mongols) - but in area size, claims the fourth largest in China, covering the whole northeast Tibetan Plateau (720,000 Square Kilometers or 278,000 Square Miles), bordering with XinJiang, Tibet (XiZang), SiChuan and GanSu.
QingHai Province through GolMud was also the only “legal” overland route within China to Lhasa Tibet open to foreigners until the opening of QingHai-Tibet Railway in June 2006.
Since the finishing of the QingHai-Tibet Railway connecting Lhasa Tibet with the rest of China through XiAn and onwards to three of the China’s biggest cities, BeiJing, ShangHai or GuangZhuo, QingHai has now acquired more appreciation for its un-spoilt and vast open grasslands, high mountains & glaciers, salt lakes, deserts and its free roaming wild life.
